Tucker Robbins is one of the furniture studios we dream about. Their imaginative forms, the use of carefully chosen materials and passion is truly exceptional. While their Manhattan showroom store hours are a bit elusive, their website shows a sampling of their products and services. While we are already convinced of their skilled craftsmanship in the permanent collection, they also offer custom pieces of exceptional quality and design.

Tucker Robbins invites you out to their 16,000 sq ft wood studio in LIC where you can browse their immense collection of both new and recycled materials and meet with the woodworkers and designers directly to get the piece you have always wanted. Their NYC showroom is located at 139 East 57th Street , and only open Tues-Thurs, so make sure to call ahead for an appointment. The real adventure is to visit their LIC Studio, which is located at 33-02 Skillman Avenue , 4th floor, inLong Island City .

They are a stunning fabrication of aluminum and whatever panel material you choose.

They have lots of glass options; different colors and opacities are available as well as a variety of laminated glass (two layers of glass with stuff between them to give it texture) and etched glass. There are also a number of wood choices available. And if you need a series of sliders for a wide opening, they’ve got it covered. To view these options in person, please go to their New York showroom/distributor Ambient Italia; 285 Spring Street, NYC; 212 255 0520.

Have you ever noticed cute little symbols on the back of a showroom identification card and wondered why they were printed there in the first place? If so, it might be wise to brush up on your Contract Fabric knowledge with the following cheat sheet. Flame: This symbol refers to the measurement of a fabric’s performance when it is exposed to specific sources of ignition. The three types of flame retardancy tests that are conducted on fabrics are the California #117, ASTM E 84-03 (Tunnel Test) and the NFPA 701-89 (Small Scale) examination.

Upholstery fabrics should pass the California #117 test and curtain materials should pass the NFPA 701-89 Test. Artist’s Palette: This palette refers to the testing of colorfastness to wet and dry crocking. In layman terms, contract textiles are tested to see whether or not the colors are able to rub off from the fabric onto clothing, hands or other materials.

This is significant because if you upholster a lounge chair for a hotel lobby, you do not want to see customers walking away with blue stains on their white linen pants. In general, most applications should pass the AATCC 8-2001 test. Sun: This symbol highlights the degree to which a fabric will retain its original color when exposed to different light intensities mimicking sunlight. Contract fabrics and wall applications should pass the AATCC 16 testing methods. Star: This star represents the three physical properties that determine a fabric’s overall performance.

Textiles are tested for pilling, for its ability to withstand tension without tearing, and for its ability to endure pulling at the seams. Different applications should pass the ASTM D35411-02 test, ASTM D 5034-95 (2001) test or the STM D 3597-02-D434-95 test. (Capital) A and (lowercase) a: The ‘A’s’ stand for fabrics that are tested to withstand damage from surface wear or abrasions administered by the Martindale or Wyzenbeek tests.

Contract textiles with a capital ‘A’ are generally used for heavy duty installations (30,000 double rubs) such as health care facilities and public arenas. Fabrics with lowercase ‘a’s’ are suitable for general contract use and can be used in guest rooms for hotels (15,000 double rubs). For further information regarding safe application guidelines for contract installations and for in depth descriptions of each test.
