Private: Day Trip! Manitoga & The Russel Wright Center
Russell Wright was one of the most influential industrial designers of the 20th century. He believed in casual, simple living and maintaining a connection with nature. These concepts were implemented in all of his designs, from the pottery he marketed as the Easy Living Collection, to his furniture and even the architecture of his own home and studio. Visit Manitoga(meaning Place of the Great Spirit in Algonquin), just north of the Bear Mountain Bridge in Garrison, NY, and see for yourself. You could spend half the day touring the house and the surrounding set of trails that Wright spent years reshaping after the land was stripped due to logging and a quarry operation.
See how the quarry became the focal point of the property and how love and passion revitalizes nature. And when you’re done, if you want more Russell Wright, including some of his furniture, check out Relic in Beacon. Relic is an antique shop that has a focus on mid-century and will always have some of his pottery in stock. In fact, the owners claim that for everyday dishware in their own home, it’s all Wright…pardon the pun. Manitoga is at 584 Route 9D. Call or visit their website for more info: 845.424.3812. Relic is at 484 Main Street in Beacon, NY, 845.440.0248.
